100 x 150 cm, mixed media on canvas, original oil painting, stretched canvas, ready to hang
‘Art stems from a visceral need’ calls to mind prehistoric cave paintings, also known as ‘parietal art’. The artist has used tissue paper as a stone-like textural base which unites stunningly with the primeval colours of red, yellow, orange and black. The red section is strongly evocative of animal hide and harkens back to the lives of the prehistoric humans who painted on cave walls, perhaps for ritualistic reasons or simply because they felt the need to create. The painting reminds the viewer of a provocative question: why do humans create art?
